Both frogs and toads breathe through their skin through a process called "Cutaneous Respiration". The Colorado River Toad Can exude a toxin through its skin, or more accurately through glands in its skin, that has psychoactive properties. They also have a "seat patch" which can be used to absorb water for rapid rehydration.
Atrazine, a common herbicide, can cause sexual disruption in amphibians and chemically castrate them, leading to a decline in population. Due to their ability to absorb both oxygen and water through their skin, amphibians are highly sensitive to the toxic chemical found in pesticides and herbicides. These chemical can travel downriver, contaminate the amphibians habitats, and threaten these amphibians. Pesticides along with destruction of their wetland and streamside habitat are the major causes of frog and toad decline. There is also a chytrid fungus that attacks them.
During particularly dry seasons, some amphibians can enter a sort of hibernating state, called aestivation. They often form a thin layer of mucus around them to prevent water loss and dehydration during this dormant period. The frogs have large, strong rear legs, which they need to make big hops to get away from predators. Toads often have powerful toxic chemicals on their backs, so they don't have or need large rear legs for big hops.
