Artist:  Harriet Peck Taylor
A mother bear introduces her cubs to salmon. Salmon carry ocean's riches upstream, nourishing forest creatures and trees. In fresh water, young salmon eat insects (mayflies and caddis fly larvae), worms, and smaller fish. They then swim downstream to the ocean. There salmon eat herring, shrimp, plankton, and krill. After growing large and strong, salmon swim upstream to spawn. Then bears, bald eagles, kingfishers, herons, harbor seals, and river otters eat the salmon. Birds and animals range about, spreading scat. After spawning, fish decompose and become nutrients for rivers, soils, and trees. When animals and plants die, their bodies also become nutrients. The caption reads "Bears and fish, the circle of life"
