About Friends of the Boundary Waters
For 50 years, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness has brought together people who love the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, over 1.1 million acres of pristine lakes, streams, and boreal forest in northern Minnesota. Our organization was instrumental in passing the 1978 Boundary Waters Protection Act, and we continue to defend these irreplaceable waters in courtrooms, legislatures, and communities across the nation.
Today, foreign mining conglomerates are trying to open toxic copper-sulfide mines at the doorstep of the Boundary Waters. Copper-sulfide mining produces acid mine drainage that leaches heavy metals like mercury, lead, and arsenic into surrounding waterways. There has never been a copper-sulfide mine that has not polluted nearby water.
Through citizen mobilization, legislative advocacy, and legal action, we have stopped these mines from opening. But the fight is far from over. The Trump administration and pro-mining allies in Congress are using new tactics to overturn protections. With your support, we will protect the Boundary Waters for another 50 years.
Beyond our advocacy work, Friends of the Boundary Waters also has the No Boundaries to the Boundary Waters program, which introduces students from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities to the splendors of the wilderness through classroom visits and week-long canoe trips into the BWCA. We believe the future of wilderness depends on getting the next generation to fall in love with these wild places.
