Wolves have not yet been extirpated from large swaths of Canada and Alaska. Wolf packs still abound in these areas where wolves are hunted, trapped, poisoned and even shot from airplanes. Although science has shown that wolves preserve the predator-prey balance, the excuse for wolf slaughter is to try to make more prey species available for human hunters.
