The snow leopard is a solitary and seldom seen animal. Loss or fragmentation of its mountain habitat and the consequent decline in the leopard’s prey base contribute to its decline, has made this elusive cat an endangered species with an estimated total population of around 6,000 individuals. Relentless poaching may be the main cause of the demise of the snow leopard as it is hunted both for its fur and for its body parts, used in ancient Asian medicine.
