A winter wolf beneath a winter moon - another of Asante Riverwind's wonderful visions of that which might sustain the spirit of those who try to foster protection for our wild world.
Wolves have not yet been extirpated from large swaths of Canada and Alaska. Wolf packs still abound in these areas where wolves are hunted, trapped, poisoned and even shot from airplanes. Governor Palin of Alaska encouraged even greater wolf slaughter when she placed a $150 bounty on wolves shot from airplanes. A judge quickly stopped the bounty payments, but not the aerial hunting. The aircraft fly during the winter, when the wolves can be clearly seen in the snow. Although science has shown that wolves preserve the predator-prey balance, the excuse for wolf slaughter is to try to make more prey species available for human hunters. This drawing by Asante Riverwind catches the indomitable spirit of the wolf as it happily faces the challenges of harsh winters and even harsher human persecution. |
