We need to repeal the right to patent lifeforms- some companies are patenting plants that have been used for centuries without making any changes to them. Others, like Monsanto have sued farmers, claiming that some of their genetically modified food crops have been planted by the farmer. The farmers claim that they are just getting pollen and seed blowing onto the fields. We should make it so the polluter pays for polluting and invading crops. Some GE cos. intentionally try to sell their seed and maybe even plant it, so that it will be impossible to have organic and /or non genetically engineered crops. In this way they can break into markets that ban it. Such food has not been tested for safety on humans or wildlife, and often not on animals. In several cases, the FDA or EPA official who approved the food as safe had worked before for or later went to work for Monsanto. Many of these cos. are buying up seed cos. Now there are only 4 seed companies left. They have developed terminator seeds that will not produce seeds that will germinate. Thus the farmer cannot save seeds. GE cos. claim that the ge foods will help with world hunger and starvation. This is a lie, as there is plenty of food, just no willingness to distribute it. They also claim it is to prevent blindness or disease. This is a lie too- so far, it would require many bowls of GE rice – too many to eat in a day- to get enough vitamins to prevent blindness. They claim it will reduce the use of pesticides. Claiming that GE crops reduce pesticide use is another lie- instead of reducing pesticide use, it requires that farmers use more of the patented pesticide that goes with the crop resistant to that pesticide, made to specifically kill off all of the other plants and weeds. Sometimes the GE crop, such as bt corn, allegedly kills off monarch butterfly caterpillars and beneficial insects. In some experiments, GE potatoes caused shrunken hearts, brains, and livers. GE L-tryptophan killed 37 and disabled 1500 people. The ge cos. just want to take over and monopolize food production- so farmers will have to come to the cos. for seeds and for pesticides.
