Provincial Court gives 6 months in Prison to Great Grandmother Betty Krawczyk for Protesting the BC government's "Working Forest" agenda.

In a horrific travesty of justice today, Justice Harvey of the BC Provincial Court sentenced 75 year old Great Grandmother Betty Krawczyk to 6 more months in prison after being convicted of criminal contempt of court. Last spring, Krawczyk was arrested in the ancient forests of the Upper Walbran Valley on Vancouver Island for peacefully blockading Weyerhaeuser's logging trucks. She was protesting the BC Liberal's Working Forest proposal. Prior to yesterday's sentencing, she had already spent 133 days in prison for refusing to sign an undertaking promising not to go near logging operations until the end of her trial. By the time she finishes her jail term in April,2004, in total she will have spent 11 months in prison for protesting Campbell's Working Forest proposal. More details will be posted soon on the websites www.wildernesscommittee.org and www.workingforest.org and on how you can write to her.
