Stop foreign tuna companies from killing our dolphins! Register your opinion. Public comments due by April 16! Dear Friend of Wildlife, One of the most successful wildlife conservation victories dolphin-safe tuna labeling is now in danger. Foreign trade interests want to turn back the clock on U.S. marine mammal protection laws passed 12 years ago. If they succeed, canneries will be allowed to apply the “dolphin-safe” label to tuna caught in the eastern tropical Pacific by the barbaric practice of chasing and encircling dolphins to catch the yellow-fin tuna that swim beneath them a practice that ruthlessly has killed more than 7 million dolphins since the late 1950's! Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans will soon make a decision that will determine the fate of labeling. That’s why I’m asking you to take three simple steps today to help save imperiled dolphins: 1. DOLPHIN DEADLY: Court ruling undercuts dolphin-safe tuna Defenders of Wildlife is vowing to appeal a judge's decision undermining one of the most significant environmental protections of the 1990s -- the dolphin-safe tuna program created by the U.S. government. Under the ruling from the Court of International Trade, foreign-caught tuna need not be verified as dolphin-safe when it comes into the United States. In addition, the Bush administration can lawfully ignore the "depleted" status of three dolphin populations harmed by tuna fishing, and it has no obligation to abide by the congressional mandate to reduce the deaths of dolphins. In the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, fishermen intentionally net dolphins to catch tuna swimming underneath. That practice has killed 7 million dolphins since the 1950s. |

| AND THE GRIND GOES ON: Conservation groups, lead by Sea Shepherd International are pressuring Denmark and its protectorate the Faroe Islands to end the "outdated, cruel, and unnecessary" killing of pilot whales and other marine mammals in a local hunt called the "grind" says ENN 9/11. Last week, 150 "small whales," not covered by IWC regulations were butchered in what Sea Shepherd describes as " a big party akin to the roman gladiator games." From greenlines | |
